About Joseph P. Ward

Joseph Ward, MD is a Michigan native who was raised in suburban Detroit and spent significant time in the summer on Torch Lake while growing up.

Dr. Ward chose orthopedic surgery with a subspecialty of hip and knee replacement for a few reasons. First, he wanted to perform surgeries that worked and improved a patient’s life. Second, he enjoys working with the patient population and helping them stay active and vibrant. Lastly, he saw a tremendous need for hip and knee replacement surgeons and wanted to help fill the need.  “My favorite part of practicing medicine is the challenge of caring for the entire person. I try my best to listen to each patient, understand their unique situation, and then provide individualized and compassionate care. It is humbling to learn from patients with tremendous life experiences.”

Dr. Ward strives to make sure his patients leave the office feeling heard. Whether the treatment plan involves testing, therapy, or surgery, he wants his patients to be confident that decisions were made working together and guided by years of experience. Dr. Ward uses modern surgical techniques, multi-modal pain management, and proven rehabilitation protocols to help provide patients the best outcome possible. Dr. Ward has a special interest in:
•    Direct anterior total hip replacement
•    Total knee replacement
•    Robotic-assisted arthroplasty
•    Revision hip and knee replacement
•    Partial knee replacement
•    Painful hip and knee replacements
•    Failed hip and knee replacements
•    Periprosthetic hip and knee fractures
•    Hip arthritis
•    Hip dysplasia
•    Avascular necrosis of the hip
•    Knee arthritis
•    Hip fractures
•    Lower extremity reconstruction
•    General orthopedics

Married since 2010, Dr. Ward met his wife Claire, an allergy specialist, at medical school orientation. They have four children. He values date nights with his wife and spending one-on-one time with his children. He enjoys cross-country and downhill skiing, jogging, golf, and cycling. He looks forward to becoming involved in church activities. Dr. Ward and his family could not be happier to be living in northern Michigan.
